Final boards

This is the final design layout i have chosen for the boards that i am going to submit for this brief. I am happy with the layout and how they portray the brief and believe it shoes that i have met the criteria of the initial brief and also how my idea and concept can be used in a range of ways.

This board show the design in context. As the brief asked the design must be able to be used for an e-flyer and work as a web banner on the colleges website.

The rear of the concertina booklet folds out into the event wall poster. This board shows how the poster will look once opened out and displayed.

As the concertina has two sides i thought it best to show both in full spread to that the layout can be seen side by side as well as when it is folded up into it's original A5 document.

A full product shot gives the range that the design will work across and how many formats it can be produced in when it has gone to print.

As the brief is live and for the college i thought it necessary to produce a board specifying all the colour pantone's that will be used along with the typefaces required so that the judging panel know the exact breakdown of the design and specific elements if they want to change any or make adjustments.

design developemnt

Now i have my design and concept i have just tweaked different layouts to see what works and what doesn't. hopefully i can settle on a suitable design for the show.

design development tests:

Initial ideas (ii)

After quickly generating my idea through the means of a A4 sheet of paper i took the time to create a mock up to the scale of 1:2. I also marked out where i wanted to include the mandatory information provided by the college. This gave me a semi-working visual in which i could then start designing towards.

With the 1:2 scale mock up i now have a clearer head of what and how i need to design the content for this promo.

Quick initial idea

When thinking up ideas for the end of year show proposal i had a quick one whilst on the move so have to sketch the concept down right then, i sketched up an idea and folding concept onto an A4 piece of paper.

The concept is Ready or not. not entirely like the hide and seek chant but based upon the graduates being ready to go into the big wide world.

It is now safe to say that you should carry a pad and pen around with you at all times because you never now when they will com in useful.
The concept format that i have created is a really simple one that is quite common at events and shows. What i intend to do then is create a similar folding system and then apply my own style towards that.
I also believe that the landscape format works better than the landscape in terms of advertising material.

Concept development

I have decided to go with this design concept for the end of year show brief. i have chosen this because i thin it has a strong concept behind it, it will work across a range of medias and products and also that the layout is away from standard portrait A5 booklets. The marketing team are looking for something a little different and this way hopefully the design will deliver.

here is the design concept i have chosen to develop a little further:

idea generation (ii)

Again instead of resorting to time consuming sketching on a piece of paper i have taken my ideas straight into indesign and tried a few different layouts out. i know this isn't the proper way to go through a design process but i believe it will generate some quick interesting ideas and concepts for this brief.

I think this design could have distance as it is eye catching and delivers the message clearly and effectively. the only bad points i could see with it is that i don't think it would be able to work consistently across a range of media and products.

In comparison to the above design i prefer this one. i think the yellow stands out alot more than the blue ad the simple left align type works better than the diagonal type.

Playing with the CMYK colour spectrum this may limit the design to seem to advertise print based courses and not represent the college as a whole.

This layout is fairly different to any one that has come before. it is an interesting concept but legibility maybe an issue when applying to other media forms.

I really like the simple centered layout of the main body of type in this design. It works really simply but effectively as a visual piece. im not too keen on te cut through lines on the type and fear these may come under criticism

As a visual concept this works well.the colour may have to be changed so that legibility isn't an issue. I think the landscape formate is a strong aspect of this design.

Again this design being big and bold really works, especially on the landscape format. i think the ready or not concept works well, with this being portrayed with the stripe of colour starting form the left and bleeding of the page, as if to signify a start but no ending. Relating back to the new careers the graduates face.

Quick idea and layout designs

Here are a few really quick ideas and designs laid out in indesign to get a feel for what form or concept the end of year promo could take.

My aim

My initial aim for this brief is to create promotional packaging and info focusing on user interaction. I don't want my resolution to be something that can be handed out, read and thrown away all in one movement. I want my design to encourage the audience to interact, pick it up and read cover to cover what information is being offered and go away knowing exactly what they need to. I also want it to be something that can be kept as a memento instead of being thrown away after the event.

The brief

The brief has been set to create promo for the leeds college of Art End of year show 2010. The show stretches across both college and a range of disciplines. The final resolution has to represent the college aswell as being high quality informative, attractive and encouraging to read and partake in the event.
